Health authorities in several key U. S. cities are warning shoppers to avoid prescription-strength Cialis, the active ingredient in both the branded and generic versions of the drug, as it could increase the risk of side effects.
Health care professionals in the United States said they are closely monitoring shoppers to avoid being overwhelmed by the increasing number of prescriptions for erectile dysfunction drugs.
“We’ve seen this happening on several occasions where men have been buying a number of different drugs in a row,” said Mike Cates, a urologist and urology professor at the University of Michigan.
The health care professionals have warned shoppers not to take Cialis with food or drink to prevent heartburn, which can occur as the drug is taken. The drug also can raise blood pressure, a condition that can be triggered by the intake of alcohol and fatty meals, Cates said.
The U. Food and Drug Administration last month recommended the use of an antidote to Cialis, saying that it could lead to an allergic reaction in some people.
The medication, which is sold in a variety of strengths, is not approved for use in men, Cates said.
He said many men, especially those who have high blood pressure and diabetes, are at risk for serious side effects related to their erectile dysfunction.
“If you’re in the middle of a sexual activity, it can be very uncomfortable, very embarrassing,” he said. “This is something that can be a real risk.”
The FDA’s warnings also came just a few weeks after a study found that about one in four men who took the drug had some degree of ED, Cates said.
The FDA also ordered health care professionals to closely monitor the use of Cialis to prevent the risk of cardiovascular events, such as heart attacks and strokes, when taken together.
The drugs are known as PDE5 inhibitors, Cates said. They work by inhibiting the production of cGMP, a chemical that increases blood flow to the penis, and also increase blood flow to the brain.
“They’re effective in treating erectile dysfunction and in reducing symptoms of sexual function,” Cates said.
He said the combination of these medications can increase sexual desire and make the sex life of men more pleasurable, Cates said.
The drug is available as an oral tablet, Cates said, and the dose is taken once a day, in a single dose, while standing or sitting or lying down, Cates said.
Cates said men taking the pills should not have more than one pill a day.
“The combination of these drugs could lead to serious side effects, such as excessive sweating, increased heart rate, low blood pressure, dizziness, or even fainting,” Cates said.
Cates said the pills are taken just like any other medication.
The drug is typically taken once a day, at the same time each day, and usually taken before the meal or up to an hour after a meal.
The dose may be changed based on the patient’s response to the medication, Cates said.
Cates said it is important to note that men who take the pills may experience side effects such as headache, nasal congestion and visual disturbances, Cates said.
A study in theJournal of Sexual Medicinefound that the number of side effects reported for Cialis was low, Cates said.
“It’s not something that’s going to be easily accessible to people,” he said.
Cates said the effects of the drug can last up to 36 hours, Cates said.
The drug is available for purchase through pharmacies in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
The drug is also sometimes used off-label in other countries, Cates said.
Cates said other ED drugs, such as Viagra and Cialis, can also cause side effects, including headache and stomach upset, which can occur even after taking the medication.

Erectile dysfunction: The Erectile Function Test (EF Test) is a recommended screening test to evaluate your sexual ability and potential for erectile dysfunction (ED).
The test involves a couples counselling service with a doctor who will ask about your medical history, overall health, and any medications you take. The doctor will assess your sexual performance based on your EF levels and any concerns about your ED symptoms.
If the test reveals that you are experiencing ED, you may seek treatment at a clinic that specializes in BPH. The doctor will also check in with you regularly to assess your sexual performance and related health conditions. Additionally, the doctor may recommend lifestyle changes to improve your sexual health.
